Quick Answer
- Rangefinder binoculars put a laser rangefinder inside a pair of binoculars. One device, one hand movement: find the animal, press the button, get the distance.
- A separate rangefinder is a small, light, one-eye device you carry next to your binoculars. It costs less and you can keep binoculars you already love.
- Pick rangefinder binoculars if you hunt open country and range often at long distances. Pick a separate rangefinder if you already own good binoculars, you bowhunt, or you're watching weight and budget.
How They Compare
| Rangefinder binoculars | Separate rangefinder | |
|---|---|---|
| Example | Vortex Fury HD 5000 Rangefinder Binoculars | Vortex Razor HD 4000 Rangefinder |
| Magnification | 10x, both eyes | 7x, one eye |
| Max range (reflective) | 5,000 yd | 4,000 yd |
| Range to a deer | 1,600 yd | 2,200 yd |
| Weight | 32.3 oz | 9.9 oz |
| Our price | $999.99 | $999.99 |
Specs are the makers' published figures. Notice that the smaller rangefinder ranges a deer further than the binoculars in this pair โ the bigger device isn't automatically the better rangefinder.
How to Read the Range Numbers
Rangefinders are sold by their biggest number, but that's usually the reflective range: a large, shiny, flat target like a rock face or a metal sign. Real targets reflect much less light. Makers usually also list:
- Tree range โ a medium target.
- Deer range โ the one that matters for hunting. A brown, furry animal returns little laser light, so this number is much lower.
For example, Vortex lists the Vortex Razor HD 4000 Rangefinder at 4,000 yards reflective, 2,500 yards on trees and 2,200 yards on deer. Rain, snow, fog, bright sun and a wobbly hand all shorten real-world range further, so leave a margin.
Hunting on hills? Look for an angle-compensated mode. Vortex calls it HCD (Horizontal Component Distance): it shows the distance your bullet or arrow actually "feels" on a steep up- or downhill shot, instead of the straight-line distance.
Why Choose Rangefinder Binoculars
- Speed. You range the animal you're already looking at, without lowering your binoculars and finding it again in a small one-eye view.
- Less movement near game, and one less item on your chest.
- Steadier ranging at long distance, because you hold it with two hands against your face.
- Ballistics built in on some models. Swarovski's current EL Range TA measures from about 10 to 2,000 meters (roughly 11 to 2,187 yards) and can be set up for your rifle through its app.
The downsides
- Weight and size โ the Fury HD 5000 weighs 32.3 oz, noticeably more than a plain 10x42 and over three times as much as the 9.9 oz Razor HD 4000.
- Cost โ the Swarovski EL Range 10ร42 is $3,699.
- Two jobs, one device. If the electronics need repair, you lose your binoculars too while it's away. With Swarovski, the electronic parts also have a shorter warranty than the optics โ see our warranty guide.
Why Choose a Separate Rangefinder
- Keep the binoculars you love, or choose any binocular for its view alone.
- Light and small โ it fits in a pocket or a chest-harness side pouch.
- Better for bowhunting, where shots are close and you often range from a tree stand with one hand.
- Much cheaper to start โ the Vortex Crossfire HD 1400 Rangefinder is $199.99 and the Vortex Diamondback HD 2000 Rangefinder is $299.99.
Which One Should You Get?
- Bowhunter or whitetail hunter in the woods: a separate rangefinder like the Vortex Diamondback HD 2000 Rangefinder.
- Rifle hunter who already owns good binoculars: add a rangefinder โ the Vortex Razor HD 4000 Rangefinder, or the Vortex Razor HD 4000 GB Rangefinder if you want ballistic holds for your rifle.
- Western or long-range hunter buying new: rangefinder binoculars โ the Vortex Fury HD 5000 Rangefinder Binoculars, or the Swarovski EL Range 10ร42 for Swarovski glass.
