Caring for Your Optics: Tips for Long-Term Performance

Practical tips for caring for your optics and protecting your investment.

Why Care Matters

Premium optics are precision instruments. Proper care keeps them performing at peak for decades. Neglect leads to degraded coatings, fungal growth, and mechanical issues that are expensive to repair.

Cleaning Your Lenses

This is where most damage happens. Never wipe a dry lens โ€” always start by blowing loose debris away with a blower bulb or compressed air. Then use a proper optical cleaning solution and lens tissue, not paper towels or clothing.

Never use: Paper towels, tissues, clothing, window cleaner, or household solvents. These scratch coatings and leave residue that attracts more dust.

Storage

Store optics in a dry, ventilated location. Avoid sealed cases for long-term storage โ€” trapped moisture promotes fungal growth on internal elements. Use silica gel packs in your storage area if you live in a humid climate.
