Why Care Matters
Premium optics are precision instruments. Proper care keeps them performing at peak for decades. Neglect leads to degraded coatings, fungal growth, and mechanical issues that are expensive to repair.
Cleaning Your Lenses
This is where most damage happens. Never wipe a dry lens โ always start by blowing loose debris away with a blower bulb or compressed air. Then use a proper optical cleaning solution and lens tissue, not paper towels or clothing.
- Step 1: Blow or brush away loose particles
- Step 2: Apply a drop of optical cleaning fluid to lens tissue (never directly to glass)
- Step 3: Wipe in gentle circular motions from center outward
- Step 4: Use a dry tissue to remove any streaks
Never use: Paper towels, tissues, clothing, window cleaner, or household solvents. These scratch coatings and leave residue that attracts more dust.
Storage
Store optics in a dry, ventilated location. Avoid sealed cases for long-term storage โ trapped moisture promotes fungal growth on internal elements. Use silica gel packs in your storage area if you live in a humid climate.
Field Care
- Keep lens caps on when not in use
- Use a quality neck strap or harness โ dropped optics are the leading cause of damage
- Dry rain-wet optics before storing โ nitrogen purging prevents internal fogging but exterior care still matters
- Service your optics every 5โ7 years with the manufacturer for professional cleaning and adjustment
